To understand the history of safety footwear, let's go back to its ancestor: the wooden clog.

Initially, wooden clogs were worn by farmers to prevent their feet from being crushed by cows and horses, but they later made their way into factories. At the time, they were considered the safest option available.

However, as industrialization accelerated, wooden clogs were no longer sufficient to ensure the safety of workers.

In the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution, factories became harsh and extremely dangerous working environments. Safety standards were nonexistent, and people protected themselves as best they could.

Faced with these grueling working conditions and high risks of occupational accidents, workers began to express their frustration and demand better workplace protection. Some even resorted to throwing their clogs into machines to damage them, giving rise to the term "sabotage"!

The history of safety footwear is closely tied to the labor movement's struggle for safer working conditions and the evolution of safety standards. It was during this period that safety shoes began to evolve into the products we know today.

The Early Days of Safety Footwear

This is when industrialists started realizing the importance of workplace safety.

Workplace accidents were becoming increasingly costly, prompting employers to pay greater attention to their workers' safety.

This led to the birth of the "first" safety footwear. In the 1930s, as workplace safety began to be taken seriously, the Red Wing Shoe Company started manufacturing steel-toed boots in Germany for workers and officers.

These shoes were heavy and uncomfortable but provided greater safety.

It was after World War II that safety footwear started to develop and rapidly gain popularity.

In the 1970s, the U.S. Congress even passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, a law aimed at ensuring safer working conditions for workers. This law included the establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an agency tasked with enforcing worker safety standards.

As a result, global safety standards like ISO standards, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), became the reference for workplace safety worldwide. However, safety footwear regulations and standards can vary from one country to another.

The history of Lemaitre Sécurité dates back to 1848 when Ignace Lemaitre became a major player in mechanizing the production of shoes and boots for the Napoleonic army in the field. This marked the beginning of Lemaitre's commitment to creating high-quality footwear designed to withstand the most demanding conditions.

Ten years later, the "Georges Lemaitre & Fils" company was established, specializing in the design of outdoor shoes for activities such as hunting, hiking, and skiing. Lemaitre shoes quickly became synonymous with durability and reliability, establishing a reputation that still holds today.

Finally, in 1974, Lemaitre Sécurité made its appearance. At a time when the world was increasingly aware of the importance of workplace safety, the brand quickly distinguished itself by becoming one of the first companies to master the technology of direct injection on double-density polyurethane (PU2D) sole units. This technological advancement enabled the creation of exceptionally high-quality safety shoes, combining comfort and protection while meeting the strictest standards.
